Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down and pump iron for decades before exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday.

Fitness icon Jack LaLanne, a man who pushed Americans to pump iron, eat better and lose weight for more than 70 years, has died. He was 96.

The so-called “godfather of fitness” died of respiratory failure from pneumonia in his Morro Bay, Calif. home Sunday afternoon, his longtime agent Rick Hersh told The Associated Press.

LaLanne was a fitness pioneer, opening the first of his many exercise studios in 1936. He focused on weight-training at a time when the idea of pumping iron was strictly taboo, especially for women.

“You have to understand that it was absolutely forbidden in those days for athletes to use weights. It just wasn’t done. We had athletes who used to sneak into the studio to work out,” he once said.

Athletic trainers believed bulking up would slow athletes down and women were supposed to look curvy and feminine, not athletic and toned.

“Back then, women weren’t supposed to use weights. I guess I was a pioneer,” LaLanne said.

LaLanne became a household name after he launched a televised exercise program in the 1950s that aired until the 1970s. He would forever after be known for his dedication to healthy living and his signature one-piece belted workout suit.

“This is a nation of tired people,” he said, in an effort to encourage people to exercise. “Everyone is suffering from that chroinc disease that I like to call pooped-out-itis.”

“Inactivity is a killer,” LaLanne once said.  “The only way you can hurt the body is not use it.”

LaLanne is survived by his wife and workout partner Elaine, his two sons Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.

“I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for,” Elaine LaLanne said in a statement. The two had been married for 51 years.

‘American Idol’ Champ Kris Allen Rates Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez – MTV.com

For our first-ever post-“American Idol “ live stream, “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” MTV News’ resident “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello brought in the big guns to discuss and dissect the premiere episode of the 10th season.

A major highlight was the appearance, via Skype, of season-eight champ Kris Allen, who said hello with his dog Zorro and offered his thoughts on the new judges.

“I thought they were good. I thought Steven Tyler was obviously the most interesting one,” Allen said. “I figured he was going to be a wacky kind of guy, and, I mean, you can’t be mad at him for singing [along] all the time — he’s freakin’ Steven Tyler! I thought it was awesome, I really did.”

When asked how Tyler and Lopez might have influenced his audition, had they been the judges during Allen’s winning season, the 25-year-old said he hoped the Aerosmith frontman would have joined in on his audition like he did on Wednesday’s episode.

“That would [have been] awesome,” Allen said. “It’s probably a little bit different to sing for someone like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, because they have been in the industry for so long and you’ve been watching them do it forever, so it would probably be weird.”

On the whole, Allen said the evening’s viewing experience — which he shared with his wife, Katy, and a couple of friends — was a good time.

“It was fun,” he said. “It wasn’t mind-blowing or anything. I thought there were some good singers. I thought there was some funny stuff, and I thought Steven Tyler was great,” he said, adding that his dog, Zorro, definitely liked J.Lo the best.

What did you think of the premiere? Share your reviews in the comments!

Andre Agassi offers nude pic of Steffi Graf to high bidder in auction – Guyism

Posted by A. Isaac

Andre Agassi must really love charity. That, or maybe he just doesn’t care about people seeing naked pics of his wife Steffi Graf.

At an auction, Agassi offered the high bidder a chance to see Graf in the buff on his phone.

I got about $20 bucks on me, anybody want to chip in the other $3880? I’ve always been fond of German female athletes. My Katarina Witt Playboy is still tucked away safely somewhere in my parents house.

After story, state pays out more in unclaimed funds – Reno Gazette Journal

Nevada’s Unclaimed Funds

May 2, 2010

THE STORY: Reno Gazette-Journal reporter Frank X. Mullen set out to locate 100 Northern Nevadans in four counties who were owed about $4.5 million, or 1 percent of the total unclaimed funds held by the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office. The newspaper found about half of the people, told them about their hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost money and how to apply for it.

WHAT RESULTED: Many of the people found by the Gazette-Journal claimed their lost money and others are in the process of locating the documentation needed to apply for their funds. From July to September, the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office Unclaimed Property Division paid out 4,895 claims, as compared with 3,617 during the same period last year. In fiscal year 2009, the division returned more than $20.6 million to rightful owners.

Hospital-acquired infections increase

July 25, 2010

THE STORY: The hospital-acquired “superbug” infection known as C.diff is on the rise in Nevada heath care facilities, reporter Frank X. Mullen found. Unlike 27 other states, Nevada does not report hospital infection statistics, so no one can track overall infection trends in the Silver State. Those infections have become more frequent, more severe and more difficult to treat.

WHAT RESULTED: The articles served as a catalyst for Nevadans whose relatives have died after contracting hospital-acquired infections to lobby for disclosure of hospital infection trends and better mandated controls to prevent such infections. Key lawmakers said they will raise the issue in the 2011 session of the Legislature.

It Could Happen Here:

Jaycee Dugard kidnapping and

a tight Parole and Probation budget

Aug. 22, 2010

THE STORY: California parole officials were sharply criticized for failing to properly supervise Phillip Garrido, who with his wife is charged with kidnapping 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard and holding her captive in a hidden backyard compound for 18 years. But an investigation by Reno Gazette-Journal Watchdog reporter Martha Bellisle into Nevada’s Division of Parole and Probation found that a similar scenario could happen here. Discussions with legislators, reviews of budget cuts and three separate audits going back to 1993 found that some offenders have gone unsupervised, leaving the public at risk.

(2 of 2)

WHAT RESULTED: Lawmakers vowed to look closely at the division during the next legislative session to determine if the agency can operate effectively with fewer officers. state Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, wants agency officials to ask for what they need to keep the public safe.

Drunken Cop, No Arrest

Sept. 26, 2010

THE STORY: Criticisms of police actions and concerns about the appearance of favoritism led to a September Reno Gazette-Journal investigation by reporter Martha Bellisle into the handling of a drunken police officer found passed out behind the wheel of his running car. The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office was unable to file DUI charges against Chad Johnston, off-duty at the time of the Feb. 14, 2009, incident, because, it said, Reno police officers waited too long to call in outside help. The delay, whether intentional or not, allowed Johnston to sober up enough to pass the tests when Washoe County Sheriff’s deputies arrived hours later.

WHAT RESULTED: Acting Reno Police Chief Steve Pitts said his officers were following protocol when they tried to determine if a crime had been committed before calling in an outside agency. However, he said his agency was in the process of toughening its rules on how officers handle DUI offenses involving one of their own.

Nursing home enforcement problems

Dec. 12, 2010

THE STORY: In Nevada, it’s easier to find out about complaints against a home improvement contractor than it is to look up complaints against nursing homes. Reporter Frank X. Mullen found that some families who have lost relatives to neglect in nursing homes have been able to win legal settlements against the facilities, but state inspections of the homes rarely result in state sanctions for instances of neglect or poor care.

WHAT RESULTED: Lawmakers have said they will raise the issue of uneven enforcement of nursing home regulations in the 2011 Legislature. The RGJ is working on a follow-up stories about nursing home conditions and quality of enforcement measures in Northern Nevada.

Insert foot joke here – Philadelphia Inquirer

Posted on Thu, Dec. 23, 2010

By T.J. Furman, Inquirer Staff Writer

Insert foot joke here

Three weeks ago the New England Patriots forced New York Jets coach Rex Ryan to put his foot in his mouth to the tune of a 45-3 rout on Monday Night Football.

Perhaps he took a moment to appreciate the foot before sticking it between his teeth.

Ryan and his wife, Michelle, are in the middle of a storm the NFL has never seen before. Deadspin was tipped off to some YouTube videos of a woman who went by the name “ihaveprettyfeet.” In the videos, the woman – who looks almost exactly like Michelle Ryan – shows off her feet in various stages of dress while relaxing. One of them even has a soundtrack where you can hear a voice remarkably similar to Rex Ryan’s speaking to the woman.

Deadspin also did a little digging and found some biographical information about Ms. ihaveprettyfeet on foot-fetish sites that points to her being Michelle Ryan.

The item was published by the website on Tuesday. Rex Ryan was asked about it by Chicago and New York reporters on Wednesday and declined to comment, calling it “a personal matter.” Both the league and the Jets used the same term when asked about their course of action.

But, really, what could they do? There is no nudity and no vulgarity in the videos Deadspin posted (six as of Wednesday evening), just a woman showing off her pretty feet.

And if Rex Ryan loves his wife’s feet, good for her.

Somebody’s lying

On Tuesday, Donovan McNabb accused Redskins coach Mike Shanahan of being unprofessional for not telling him about his demotion before it was leaked to reporters. McNabb also said he didn’t know he was being dropped to third on the depth chart before Shanahan announced it at a news conference.

Shanahan disputed the second point on Wednesday.

“I don’t know how that’s possible because the first person I told was him,” Shanahan said.

How the awful West will be won

Let’s return to the most fertile of grounds for comedic pigskin fodder. No, it’s not the Giants’ special teams. It’s the race for the NFC West, which each week looks more and more like one of those minor-league baseball promotions that has two fans running down the baseline after spinning around a bat 10 times.

Last Thursday, the Cardinals lost their 10th game and ruined our scenario in which all four division teams ended 7-9.

We’ve cleaned the egg from our faces and regrouped and are ready for another round of doomsday prognosticating:

In Week 16, the San Francisco 49ers will beat the St. Louis Rams, and the Seattle Seahawks will win at Tampa Bay.

In Week 17, the Niners will beat Arizona at home, and the Rams will take down the Seahawks on the road, leaving those three teams in first place at 7-9.

When that happens, a computer will spit out the 49ers as the NFC West champs. And football fans will feel spat upon as they watch the Niners host a playoff game.

“To still be in it, it’s amazing,” the 49ers’ Vernon Davis said.

One man’s amazing is another’s embarrassing.

Sure, now you do it

Repair workers at the Metrodome resorted to using a shotgun on Monday to blow out a piece of the stadium’s roof to relieve stress from snow and ice. Major-league outfielders would like to know why that wasn’t to relieve their own stress 28 years ago.

Jets coach Rex Ryan: Foot-fetish report is ‘personal matter’ – SportingNews.com

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called an Internet report that alleges his wife, Michelle, appeared in and posted foot-fetish videos a “personal matter.”

Deadspin.com posted several videos showing a woman that resembles Michelle Ryan showing off her feet. In one video, the cameraman talking to the woman sounds like Rex Ryan, according to the website. Deadspin reports there is other evidence that could link the Ryans to the videos, including a location (Ellicott City, Md.) listed on a foot fetish site that is the same location as where the Ryans lived when Rex was the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator.

Jets coach Rex Ryan: Foot-fetish report is 'personal matter'New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called an Internet report that alleges his wife, Michelle, appeared in and posted foot-fetish videos a “personal matter.”

The New York Daily News printed a screen capture from one of the foot-fetish videos on its front page Wednesday.

The Jets issued a statement, per the Daily News: “This is a personal matter and Rex will have no comment.” Rex is scheduled to meet with the New York media Wednesday afternoon.

This is not the first off-the-field incident the Jets have had to worry about this season. The NFL is investigating two separate cases; one in which strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped a Dolphins player during a game and another in which a female TV reporter allegedly was harassed by players at a Jets practice.
