2011 East-West Shrine Game Preview – Stampede Blue

If you’re feeling in need of a football fix today, given the fact that both NFL conference championship games are tomorrow, I highly suggest that you tune in to the 2011 East-West Shrine Game at 4 p.m. on NFL Network.

For those unfamiliar with this tradition, the East-West Shrine Game pits collegiate all-stars from schools in the Western United States against counterparts in the Eastern United States and all the while serves as one of the first major postseason scouting events for NFL clubs.

Like every other team in the league, the Colts will have their scouting staff at the game, making evaluations.  They have already shown interest in Utah guard Caleb Schlauderaff, and this afternoon, fans might be able to ascertain — or at least enjoy projecting — which players will make their case to appear on the Colts’ scouting radar.

After the jump, we’ll preview this game from a Colts fan’s perspective and give you some things to consider when you tune in this afternoon.

Star-divide

Historically, this contest has proved particularly valuable to the Colts.  As BBS noted in a Stampede Blue conference call this week, the Colts love to utilize the game as a method for scouting Canadian players.  How do we know this?  In 2010, WR Jordan Sisco was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up in undrafted free agency.  In 2008, WR Samuel Giguere was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up in undrafted free agency and stashed him on the practice squad for the year.  In 2006, OT Daniel Federkeil was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up as a practice squad stash that eventually spent some time on the active roster.  So while 2009 and 2007 ultimately proved to be quiet on the Canadian front, the Colts have shown a history of using the Shrine Game to scout Canadian players.

This year’s Shrine Game features two Canadian invitations: WR Anthony Parker (Calgary) and OT Matt O’Donnell (Queens, Ontario.)  We’ll keep an eye out on both, as the Colts have shown interest in those positions from the Canadian crop in recent years.

The Colts have also shown interest in American players invited to play in this game.  Last year, Javarris James and Blair White played for the East side and proved to be the only Shrine Game players to end up on the Colts’ roster aside from Sisco (LT Chris Marinelli made a brief appearance when Charlie Johnson was injured in training camp, but couldn’t stick) but that isn’t to say that the game was lacking for rookie talent.  A quick survey of last year’s participants would turn up John Skelton (QB, Arizona), Rodger Saffold (LT, Indiana), Andrew Quarless (TE, Green Bay), Kam Chancellor (S, Seattle), Seyi Ajirotutu (WR, San Diego), T.J. Ward (S, Cleveland), Emmanuel Sanders (WR, Pittsburgh) and Alterraun Verner (CB, Tennessee), all of whom made significant contributions their rookie season.

Typically, the game doesn’t attract the elite, top-of-the-first round talent, guys like Nick Fairley, Patrick Peterson, Da’Quan Bowers or A.J. Green, but in my experience, those guys are boring anyway.  We know where they’re going in the draft.  In that sense, provided they stay intact between now and April, their stock is going to remain at the top.  The East-West game is exciting for the same reason the NFL Scouting Combine is: it gives lesser-known prospects a chance to shine and improve their draft stock.  It gives draft nuts ammunition for making that six millionth change to their mock draft, and it gives us a better idea of what kind of players constitute the 2011 NFL Draft class.

As far as 2011 prospects in the American pool, I thought we might want to keep an eye on the following players today:

Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina: you can almost guarantee that the Colts shy away from this kid due to character concerns, but there will be no more talked about prospect playing today.  Austin was once considered a top 15 prospect before he got caught up a recruiting schedule.  He has a chance to ‘wow’ scouts and force them to downplay those character concerns in favor of acknowledging his talent.  Austin will be an interesting player to watch in the broader NFL draft sense, not specifically for the Colts.
Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond: the Colts need help at cornerback.  That’s my stance anyway.  Jerraud Powers is a terrific talent who has been injured down the home stretch of his first two NFL seasons (though he did return to play, briefly, in last year’s Super Bowl) and Kelvin Hayden seems destined to play about 10 games a season and call it quits.  Justin Tryon proved to be a steal, but the Colts simply cannot rely on guys like Jacob Lacey and Cornelius Brown to play major minutes.  They also have to continue their shift toward corners who can handle man coverage, who have the speed to run with receivers down the field and the ball skills that a guy like Powers possesses to break up passes.  Rogers might be a player in that caliber.  He’s undersized, but has great speed and is also a weapon in the return game.
David Sims, SS, Iowa State: Sims is an undersized safety who has proved to be a tackling machine.  He had 17 tackles against Oklahoma last year.  That’s not a typo.  He’s hard-hitting and hard-working and should be of interest to an Indianapolis defensive backfield that was forced to start Aaron Francisco last year.  At the very least, a guy like Sims would be helpful on special teams.  I hate making draft prospects out to be more than they are — I’m rarely confident enough about a player to claim he absolutely will make an NFL squad, much less make an impact — but Sims at least seems to be in the mold of a player who could contribute for Indianapolis.
Terrence Turner, WR, Indiana: never overlook backyard talent; it’s too easy to scout.  As an IU alum, I’ve, of course, seen all the IU prospects in this draft in game action.  Turner made some waves with a surprisingly good senior season.  Quiet most of his career, Turner exploded for 67 receptions for 681 yards and three scores for the pass-happy Hoosiers.  Not eye-popping numbers, but Turner was the third receiver behind fellow draft prospect Tandon Doss and junior receiver Damarlo Belcher, and most of his receptions were critical, chain-moving types.  Turner doesn’t have blazing speed, but he has good size at 6-3 and is a possession-type receiver that’s proven adept at moving the chains.  I like IU prospects Doss, QB Ben Chappell and RT James Brewer much more, but Turner, as a backyard prospect, is at least worth watching.
Brandon Bair, DT, Oregon: as the Colts look to potentially replace some departing DTs, Oregon’s Bair could be answer.  At 6-6 but only 272 pounds, Bair has a bit of an awkward build, but you can’t argue the one thing the Colts value most: his productivity.  Bair led the PAC10 in tackles for loss last year and plays with great leverage.  SB Nation Atlanta identified him as one of three PAC10 players to watch as the NFL Draft approaches.  Bair would not be the answer to the Colts’ problems at DT, but could be a player in the build of Eric Foster that just plays with a good motor and forces his way into plays.
Joseph Barksdale, LT, LSU: the Colts will obviously be taking a look at the OT ranks in this year’s game, and Barksdale may be among the best of the participants.  At 6-5, 315, Barksdale possesses tremendous athleticism and good footwork.  He has long arms and is a great pocket protector because he’s adept at riding defensive ends out of the play.  Many NFL Draft sites are puzzled as to why Barksdale isn’t rated higher than someone like Derek Sherrod.  Barksdale was apparently perfect all week in Shrine Bowl practice and proved that he’s game to play LT at the NFL level.
David Carter, DT, UCLA: Carter is another player that had a tremendous week of practice, causing havoc in the backfield and beating blockers with startling consistency.  At 6-5, 297, he seems to have an ideal build for a three-technique DL for the Colts and is currently being projected as a fifth or sixth rounder.
Patrick DiMarco, FB, South Carolina: I only mention DiMarco for two reasons.  First, it’s rare that scouts actually rave about a fullback at Shrine Bowl practice, but DiMarco apparently had a very impressive showing both blocking for runningbacks and quarterbacks.  Apparently he just destroyed some defensive linemen.  And perhaps more importantly, the Colts are looking to take the run game in a different direction, or so excuses the firing of former running backs coach Gene Huey.  Might they be considering writing a fullback into the playbook?  A real fullback, not a defensive tackle convert?  I think this very realistically could be a move the Colts are looking to make, and DiMarco might be the best fullback prospect in this draft, so you can see why he should spark interest.
Jeff Maehl, WR, Oregon: If you watched the BCS National Championship game, you heard announcers talking about how good a guy like Maehl would look at the next level with Peyton Manning throwing to him.  And it’s hard not to envision it.  I hate to stereotype that all tough, white receivers end up as Colts, but Indy’s roster speaks for itself sometimes.  Maehl, like Austin Collie, is an extremely proficient route-runner who, despite lacking ideal speed, just finds a way to get open.  I could easily see Maehl being on the Colts’ board.

Of course, now that I listed those guys, some complete unknown will dominate this game and make these picks irrelevant.  Oh well.  That’s half the fun of the period leading up to the NFL Draft.

Make sure to tune in to the NFL Network at 4 p.m. today to catch the East-West Shrine Game.

Jim Cornelison: Blackhawks Singer Gives Bears Much Needed Boost – Bleacher Report

Jim Cornelison is no stranger to giant sized crowds. He has been the voice of the Blackhawks national anthem for years. But today he was asked to step outside his comfort zone. He was needed on a cold blustery day in Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Cornelison sang the national anthem at today’s NFC divisional contest pitting the Chicago Bears against the Seattle Seahawks. Immediately, those unfamiliar with Cornelison and his vocal talents were amazed. He gives a weight and gravitas to this nation’s greatest song that is sometimes missing from pregame festivities.

The rousing rendition of the national anthem certainly worked to give the Chicago Bears a jolt of energy. The Bears came out of the gate firing against the Seahawks. The defense stopped anything that the Seahawks threw at them in the first half. The result was a second round win for the Bears and a trip to the NFC Championship game.

NFL Playoff Schedule: Wildcard Weekend – Exec Digital

The NFL playoffs are finally here, which can only mean one thing: Get your popcorn ready baby. In fact, you should probably just install a popcorn machine next to your couch this weekend because you won’t be moving from it. The NFL playoffs kick off this weekend (Jan. 8-9) and with New England, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Chicago all earning first-round byes, there are eight teams that will duke it out during Wildcard Weekend.

Hopefully your team is one of the Lucky 12 that navigated their way into the playoffs because the popcorn will taste that much better. As we all have come to learn, It’s a new season and anybody can win … except for Seattle. We will give credit where credit is due though. Congratulations Seattle, you became the first team in the NFL to make the playoffs with a losing record (7-9). Be proud Seachickens! Check out the four games on tap for this weekend. It’s going to be a doozy.

Saturday, January 8

No. 5 New Orleans Saints (11-5) at No. 4 Seattle Seattle (7-9) at Qwest Field, 4:30 p.m., ET, NBCThe defending Super Bowl champion Saints will travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks, which we noted earlier, is the first team to make the NFL playoffs with a losing record. Tampa Bay and New York both had a better record than Seattle but because the Seahawks won the NFC West title, they get an automatic bid to the playoffs. Drew Brees and the Saints offense will roll in this game.

Biggest Question: Will Seattle get blown out and force NFL Comish Roger Goddell to revamp the playoff system next year to prevent teams from losing records from making the playoffs?

No. 6 New York Jets (11-5) at No. 3 Indianapolis Colts (10-6) at Lucas Oil Stadium, 8 p.m. ET, NBCThe Indianapolis Colts haven’t played anywhere near the caliber that we’ve come to expect from under the tutelage of Peyton Manning, but they’re in so it doesn’t matter now. Peyton has looked rattled at times this year, especially against the blitz, so look for the Jets and coach Rex Ryan to exploit that fact with some creative blitz packages.

Biggest Question: Can the Jets back up all of that trash they talked on Hard Knocks?

Sunday Jan. 9

No. 6 Green Bay Packers (10-6) at No. 3 Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) at Lincoln Financial Field, 4:30 p.m. ET, FOXGreen Bay played their way into the playoffs with a 10-3 win over Chicago in Week 17, while Philadelphia put it on cruise control knowing that it would have the No. 3 seed regardless. The Packers will go into Lincoln Financial Field looking for an upset over Michael Vick, who has had an MVP-type season. The Packers beat the Eagles earlier this season, but at that point Vick was still playing behind Kevin Kolb. Seriously, how long ago does that seem?Biggest Question: Will Vick continue being Philly’s Superman, or will Charles Woodson and the Packers bring his kryptonite?

No. 5 Baltimore Ravens (12-4) at No. 4 Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) Arrowhead Stadium, 1 p.m., ET, CBSThe Kansas City Chiefs are the biggest surprise of the NFL season, but they will have a tough welcome-to-the-playoffs moment when they host Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Ray Rice, Joe Flacco and Anquan Boldin power the Ravens offense, while Matt Cassel has his own star target in wideout Dwayne Bowe. Arrowhead might be one of the toughest places to play, but I doubt the term “tough environment” is even in the Ravens vocabulary.

Biggest Question: Who will prevail, the young rookies or the crafty (terrifying) veterans?

Michelle Ryan’s foot fetish, crybaby Matt Dodge, no more Fore! … – Weekly Volcano

STRIKE ONE

Deadspin.com – the sports worlds’ leader in penis-related breaking news and everything else bizarre or downright absurd – uncovered and posted videos this week that appear to show Jets coach Rex Ryan’s wife, Michelle, in what at first glance would seem to be a compromising position … that is until you realize she likely made the videos herself (if it is, indeed, her).

You see, the videos, which apparently first appeared on YouTube a few years back from the user “ihaveprettyfeet,” are foot-fetish related; some with titles like “Hot Mature Sexy Feet.” In all of them, a women who looks much like Michelle Ryan shows off her feet – whether bare or in shoes or having lotion rubbed on them (hot! … or not). In some of the videos the male cameraman can be heard making spicy comments, in a voice that sounds much like Rex Ryan’s. But that’s a discussion for another day. …

A day like Wednesday, Dec. 22, when ESPN and the entire Jets press corps had already picked up on the story and hounded the (shall we say robust) coach during his usual, mid-week press conference.

“It’s a personal matter and I’m really not going to discuss it, OK?” Ryan was quoted as saying.

Probably a good call … although I might recommend not taping it and posting it on the Internet, too.

STRIKE TWO

There was good news for my golf game this week when the New York State Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that errant shots on the course are an “inherent risk” of the game, and players can’t expect a warning of “Fore!” whenever a nasty slice comes their way. The ruling came as part of the dismissal of a personal injury lawsuit.

According to an ESPN report of the case, friends and (former?) golf buddies Dr. Anoop Kapoor and Dr. Azad Anand were playing a nine-hole course in Long Island, NY, when Anand was struck in the head by Kapoor’s bad shot – an injury that resulted in Anand being blinded in one eye. The court ruled that Kapoor’s failure to yell “Fore!” after his miserable rough shot didn’t amount to “intentional or reckless” conduct.

“The manner in which Anand was injured – being hit without warning by a ‘shanked’ shot while one searches for one’s own ball – reflects a commonly appreciated risk of golf,” the court stated in its finding.

Besides setting a precedent, the case may mark the first time the term “shanked” has been used in an official court ruling.

Other “commonly appreciated risks” of golfing include khakis and funny socks.

STRIKE THREE

New York Giants’ punter Matt Dodge has seen better days. As you’ve probably seen by now (likely ad nauseam), Dodge’s last-play punt against the Eagles Sunday was returned for a touchdown by DeSean Jackson – breaking the game’s tie score, and giving the Eagles a miraculous, come-from-behind victory. The Giants had previously held a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter. Always a dangerous return man, Dodge was instructed to punt the ball out of bounds instead of giving Jackson a shot at it.

Obviously, this didn’t happen. …

But (astoundingly) it gets even worse for Dodge. According to a report by Philadelphia radio personality Howard Eskin, Dodge was seen crying in the locker room after the game by Giants coach Tom Coughlin, and was immediately told to leave – the clear impression was that he was being cut on the spot and kicked out of the locker room.

On Wednesday, Dodge went on the radio himself, refuting the claim that Coughlin kicked him out or implied he was going to be cut. The fact that  Dodge is still on the team seems to support this take.

But, there’s still got to be a, “get the hell out of Dodge,” joke in here somewhere, right?

DUMB JOCK OF THE WEEK

Let’s hand it to Mississippi State Bulldogs’ forward Renardo Sidney, suspended for one game recently by the team after an outburst at practice while the Bulldogs were in Hawaii preparing for the Diamond Head Classic. While coach Rick Stansbury would cite only, “conduct detrimental to the team,” as the reason for Sidney’s one-game suspension, that didn’t stop the 6-foot-10-inch, 270-pound baller from taking his case to Twitter.

“Haha,” Sidney reportedly tweeted of the suspension. “keep hating people am loving it. …”

At least one thing is certain: During that suspension Sidney would be wise to spend extra time with his grammar tutor.

LOCAL BLACKOUT

After being benched during last Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, much-beleaguered Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be back in the starting lineup this week when the team travels to Tampa Bay for what seems sure to be its seventh loss in the last nine games. On the bright side, at least Matt’s wife is a lot cooler than his brother’s.

Insert foot joke here – Philadelphia Inquirer

Posted on Thu, Dec. 23, 2010

By T.J. Furman, Inquirer Staff Writer

Insert foot joke here

Three weeks ago the New England Patriots forced New York Jets coach Rex Ryan to put his foot in his mouth to the tune of a 45-3 rout on Monday Night Football.

Perhaps he took a moment to appreciate the foot before sticking it between his teeth.

Ryan and his wife, Michelle, are in the middle of a storm the NFL has never seen before. Deadspin was tipped off to some YouTube videos of a woman who went by the name “ihaveprettyfeet.” In the videos, the woman – who looks almost exactly like Michelle Ryan – shows off her feet in various stages of dress while relaxing. One of them even has a soundtrack where you can hear a voice remarkably similar to Rex Ryan’s speaking to the woman.

Deadspin also did a little digging and found some biographical information about Ms. ihaveprettyfeet on foot-fetish sites that points to her being Michelle Ryan.

The item was published by the website on Tuesday. Rex Ryan was asked about it by Chicago and New York reporters on Wednesday and declined to comment, calling it “a personal matter.” Both the league and the Jets used the same term when asked about their course of action.

But, really, what could they do? There is no nudity and no vulgarity in the videos Deadspin posted (six as of Wednesday evening), just a woman showing off her pretty feet.

And if Rex Ryan loves his wife’s feet, good for her.

Somebody’s lying

On Tuesday, Donovan McNabb accused Redskins coach Mike Shanahan of being unprofessional for not telling him about his demotion before it was leaked to reporters. McNabb also said he didn’t know he was being dropped to third on the depth chart before Shanahan announced it at a news conference.

Shanahan disputed the second point on Wednesday.

“I don’t know how that’s possible because the first person I told was him,” Shanahan said.

How the awful West will be won

Let’s return to the most fertile of grounds for comedic pigskin fodder. No, it’s not the Giants’ special teams. It’s the race for the NFC West, which each week looks more and more like one of those minor-league baseball promotions that has two fans running down the baseline after spinning around a bat 10 times.

Last Thursday, the Cardinals lost their 10th game and ruined our scenario in which all four division teams ended 7-9.

We’ve cleaned the egg from our faces and regrouped and are ready for another round of doomsday prognosticating:

In Week 16, the San Francisco 49ers will beat the St. Louis Rams, and the Seattle Seahawks will win at Tampa Bay.

In Week 17, the Niners will beat Arizona at home, and the Rams will take down the Seahawks on the road, leaving those three teams in first place at 7-9.

When that happens, a computer will spit out the 49ers as the NFC West champs. And football fans will feel spat upon as they watch the Niners host a playoff game.

“To still be in it, it’s amazing,” the 49ers’ Vernon Davis said.

One man’s amazing is another’s embarrassing.

Sure, now you do it

Repair workers at the Metrodome resorted to using a shotgun on Monday to blow out a piece of the stadium’s roof to relieve stress from snow and ice. Major-league outfielders would like to know why that wasn’t to relieve their own stress 28 years ago.
