2011 East-West Shrine Game Preview – Stampede Blue

If you’re feeling in need of a football fix today, given the fact that both NFL conference championship games are tomorrow, I highly suggest that you tune in to the 2011 East-West Shrine Game at 4 p.m. on NFL Network.

For those unfamiliar with this tradition, the East-West Shrine Game pits collegiate all-stars from schools in the Western United States against counterparts in the Eastern United States and all the while serves as one of the first major postseason scouting events for NFL clubs.

Like every other team in the league, the Colts will have their scouting staff at the game, making evaluations.  They have already shown interest in Utah guard Caleb Schlauderaff, and this afternoon, fans might be able to ascertain — or at least enjoy projecting — which players will make their case to appear on the Colts’ scouting radar.

After the jump, we’ll preview this game from a Colts fan’s perspective and give you some things to consider when you tune in this afternoon.

Star-divide

Historically, this contest has proved particularly valuable to the Colts.  As BBS noted in a Stampede Blue conference call this week, the Colts love to utilize the game as a method for scouting Canadian players.  How do we know this?  In 2010, WR Jordan Sisco was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up in undrafted free agency.  In 2008, WR Samuel Giguere was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up in undrafted free agency and stashed him on the practice squad for the year.  In 2006, OT Daniel Federkeil was invited to participate…the Colts picked him up as a practice squad stash that eventually spent some time on the active roster.  So while 2009 and 2007 ultimately proved to be quiet on the Canadian front, the Colts have shown a history of using the Shrine Game to scout Canadian players.

This year’s Shrine Game features two Canadian invitations: WR Anthony Parker (Calgary) and OT Matt O’Donnell (Queens, Ontario.)  We’ll keep an eye out on both, as the Colts have shown interest in those positions from the Canadian crop in recent years.

The Colts have also shown interest in American players invited to play in this game.  Last year, Javarris James and Blair White played for the East side and proved to be the only Shrine Game players to end up on the Colts’ roster aside from Sisco (LT Chris Marinelli made a brief appearance when Charlie Johnson was injured in training camp, but couldn’t stick) but that isn’t to say that the game was lacking for rookie talent.  A quick survey of last year’s participants would turn up John Skelton (QB, Arizona), Rodger Saffold (LT, Indiana), Andrew Quarless (TE, Green Bay), Kam Chancellor (S, Seattle), Seyi Ajirotutu (WR, San Diego), T.J. Ward (S, Cleveland), Emmanuel Sanders (WR, Pittsburgh) and Alterraun Verner (CB, Tennessee), all of whom made significant contributions their rookie season.

Typically, the game doesn’t attract the elite, top-of-the-first round talent, guys like Nick Fairley, Patrick Peterson, Da’Quan Bowers or A.J. Green, but in my experience, those guys are boring anyway.  We know where they’re going in the draft.  In that sense, provided they stay intact between now and April, their stock is going to remain at the top.  The East-West game is exciting for the same reason the NFL Scouting Combine is: it gives lesser-known prospects a chance to shine and improve their draft stock.  It gives draft nuts ammunition for making that six millionth change to their mock draft, and it gives us a better idea of what kind of players constitute the 2011 NFL Draft class.

As far as 2011 prospects in the American pool, I thought we might want to keep an eye on the following players today:

Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina: you can almost guarantee that the Colts shy away from this kid due to character concerns, but there will be no more talked about prospect playing today.  Austin was once considered a top 15 prospect before he got caught up a recruiting schedule.  He has a chance to ‘wow’ scouts and force them to downplay those character concerns in favor of acknowledging his talent.  Austin will be an interesting player to watch in the broader NFL draft sense, not specifically for the Colts.
Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond: the Colts need help at cornerback.  That’s my stance anyway.  Jerraud Powers is a terrific talent who has been injured down the home stretch of his first two NFL seasons (though he did return to play, briefly, in last year’s Super Bowl) and Kelvin Hayden seems destined to play about 10 games a season and call it quits.  Justin Tryon proved to be a steal, but the Colts simply cannot rely on guys like Jacob Lacey and Cornelius Brown to play major minutes.  They also have to continue their shift toward corners who can handle man coverage, who have the speed to run with receivers down the field and the ball skills that a guy like Powers possesses to break up passes.  Rogers might be a player in that caliber.  He’s undersized, but has great speed and is also a weapon in the return game.
David Sims, SS, Iowa State: Sims is an undersized safety who has proved to be a tackling machine.  He had 17 tackles against Oklahoma last year.  That’s not a typo.  He’s hard-hitting and hard-working and should be of interest to an Indianapolis defensive backfield that was forced to start Aaron Francisco last year.  At the very least, a guy like Sims would be helpful on special teams.  I hate making draft prospects out to be more than they are — I’m rarely confident enough about a player to claim he absolutely will make an NFL squad, much less make an impact — but Sims at least seems to be in the mold of a player who could contribute for Indianapolis.
Terrence Turner, WR, Indiana: never overlook backyard talent; it’s too easy to scout.  As an IU alum, I’ve, of course, seen all the IU prospects in this draft in game action.  Turner made some waves with a surprisingly good senior season.  Quiet most of his career, Turner exploded for 67 receptions for 681 yards and three scores for the pass-happy Hoosiers.  Not eye-popping numbers, but Turner was the third receiver behind fellow draft prospect Tandon Doss and junior receiver Damarlo Belcher, and most of his receptions were critical, chain-moving types.  Turner doesn’t have blazing speed, but he has good size at 6-3 and is a possession-type receiver that’s proven adept at moving the chains.  I like IU prospects Doss, QB Ben Chappell and RT James Brewer much more, but Turner, as a backyard prospect, is at least worth watching.
Brandon Bair, DT, Oregon: as the Colts look to potentially replace some departing DTs, Oregon’s Bair could be answer.  At 6-6 but only 272 pounds, Bair has a bit of an awkward build, but you can’t argue the one thing the Colts value most: his productivity.  Bair led the PAC10 in tackles for loss last year and plays with great leverage.  SB Nation Atlanta identified him as one of three PAC10 players to watch as the NFL Draft approaches.  Bair would not be the answer to the Colts’ problems at DT, but could be a player in the build of Eric Foster that just plays with a good motor and forces his way into plays.
Joseph Barksdale, LT, LSU: the Colts will obviously be taking a look at the OT ranks in this year’s game, and Barksdale may be among the best of the participants.  At 6-5, 315, Barksdale possesses tremendous athleticism and good footwork.  He has long arms and is a great pocket protector because he’s adept at riding defensive ends out of the play.  Many NFL Draft sites are puzzled as to why Barksdale isn’t rated higher than someone like Derek Sherrod.  Barksdale was apparently perfect all week in Shrine Bowl practice and proved that he’s game to play LT at the NFL level.
David Carter, DT, UCLA: Carter is another player that had a tremendous week of practice, causing havoc in the backfield and beating blockers with startling consistency.  At 6-5, 297, he seems to have an ideal build for a three-technique DL for the Colts and is currently being projected as a fifth or sixth rounder.
Patrick DiMarco, FB, South Carolina: I only mention DiMarco for two reasons.  First, it’s rare that scouts actually rave about a fullback at Shrine Bowl practice, but DiMarco apparently had a very impressive showing both blocking for runningbacks and quarterbacks.  Apparently he just destroyed some defensive linemen.  And perhaps more importantly, the Colts are looking to take the run game in a different direction, or so excuses the firing of former running backs coach Gene Huey.  Might they be considering writing a fullback into the playbook?  A real fullback, not a defensive tackle convert?  I think this very realistically could be a move the Colts are looking to make, and DiMarco might be the best fullback prospect in this draft, so you can see why he should spark interest.
Jeff Maehl, WR, Oregon: If you watched the BCS National Championship game, you heard announcers talking about how good a guy like Maehl would look at the next level with Peyton Manning throwing to him.  And it’s hard not to envision it.  I hate to stereotype that all tough, white receivers end up as Colts, but Indy’s roster speaks for itself sometimes.  Maehl, like Austin Collie, is an extremely proficient route-runner who, despite lacking ideal speed, just finds a way to get open.  I could easily see Maehl being on the Colts’ board.

Of course, now that I listed those guys, some complete unknown will dominate this game and make these picks irrelevant.  Oh well.  That’s half the fun of the period leading up to the NFL Draft.

Make sure to tune in to the NFL Network at 4 p.m. today to catch the East-West Shrine Game.

Jim Cornelison: Blackhawks Singer Gives Bears Much Needed Boost – Bleacher Report

Jim Cornelison is no stranger to giant sized crowds. He has been the voice of the Blackhawks national anthem for years. But today he was asked to step outside his comfort zone. He was needed on a cold blustery day in Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Cornelison sang the national anthem at today’s NFC divisional contest pitting the Chicago Bears against the Seattle Seahawks. Immediately, those unfamiliar with Cornelison and his vocal talents were amazed. He gives a weight and gravitas to this nation’s greatest song that is sometimes missing from pregame festivities.

The rousing rendition of the national anthem certainly worked to give the Chicago Bears a jolt of energy. The Bears came out of the gate firing against the Seahawks. The defense stopped anything that the Seahawks threw at them in the first half. The result was a second round win for the Bears and a trip to the NFC Championship game.

Seahawks make history, soar into playoffs – ESPN (blog)

With the NFC West title up for grabs, the St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard on Sunday Night. In fact, the 22 combined points are the fewest in Rams/Seahawks history breaking a record the two teams set earlier this season (23). Despite the anemic offenses (or stout defenses depending on how you look at it) the Seahawks were able to make history in the final game of the 2010 NFL regular season. In defeating the Rams, the Seahawks became the first team in NFL history to win a division title with a sub-.500 record (7-9).

It’s the club’s seventh division title and first since 2007. Coach Pete Carroll returns to the NFL playoffs for the first time since leading the New England Patriots there in 1998 and becomes the 27th coach in NFL history to lead two different teams to the playoffs.

Despite entering Sunday with the worst running game in the NFL (85.5 Rush YPG) the Seahawks broke free for 141 yards (Seattle’s third-most this season). Much of the ground attack was handled by running back Marshawn Lynch who netted all 75 of his rush yards and three of his four first downs in the second half. All but one of those yards came on attempts to the right side, his highest single-game total to the right over the last three seasons.

The other offensive story for the Seahawks was backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, making his second career NFL start. Whitehurst connected with wide receiver Ruvell Martin on a 61-yard pass play during the opening drive that setup the game’s only touchdown (Mike Williams four-yard reception). Whitehurst wasn’t asked to do much more as 23 of his 36 passes were thrown to targets within five yards of the line of scrimmage (63.8 pct). To put that in context, starter Matt Hasselbeck had thrown only 46.8 percent of his passes five yards or fewer this season.

Sunday’s game for Whitehurst’s quarterback counterpart, Sam Bradford, was filled with highs and lows. Of Bradford’s 36 pass attempts 33 were less than 20 yards, and when the rookie did throw the deep ball, he once again struggled. On the season, Bradford connected on just 33.8 percent of his attempts of at least 15 yards, which is well below the NFL average of 41.4 percent. Things were no different against the Seahawks as Bradford went 0-7.

Some good news is that Bradford’s 36 pass attempts gave him 590 on the season, most in NFL history by a rookie. He also finished with 3,512 pass yards on the season, second-most in NFL history by a rookie behind Peyton Manning’s record of 3,739 yards.

NFL Playoff Schedule: Wildcard Weekend – Exec Digital

The NFL playoffs are finally here, which can only mean one thing: Get your popcorn ready baby. In fact, you should probably just install a popcorn machine next to your couch this weekend because you won’t be moving from it. The NFL playoffs kick off this weekend (Jan. 8-9) and with New England, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Chicago all earning first-round byes, there are eight teams that will duke it out during Wildcard Weekend.

Hopefully your team is one of the Lucky 12 that navigated their way into the playoffs because the popcorn will taste that much better. As we all have come to learn, It’s a new season and anybody can win … except for Seattle. We will give credit where credit is due though. Congratulations Seattle, you became the first team in the NFL to make the playoffs with a losing record (7-9). Be proud Seachickens! Check out the four games on tap for this weekend. It’s going to be a doozy.

Saturday, January 8

No. 5 New Orleans Saints (11-5) at No. 4 Seattle Seattle (7-9) at Qwest Field, 4:30 p.m., ET, NBCThe defending Super Bowl champion Saints will travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks, which we noted earlier, is the first team to make the NFL playoffs with a losing record. Tampa Bay and New York both had a better record than Seattle but because the Seahawks won the NFC West title, they get an automatic bid to the playoffs. Drew Brees and the Saints offense will roll in this game.

Biggest Question: Will Seattle get blown out and force NFL Comish Roger Goddell to revamp the playoff system next year to prevent teams from losing records from making the playoffs?

No. 6 New York Jets (11-5) at No. 3 Indianapolis Colts (10-6) at Lucas Oil Stadium, 8 p.m. ET, NBCThe Indianapolis Colts haven’t played anywhere near the caliber that we’ve come to expect from under the tutelage of Peyton Manning, but they’re in so it doesn’t matter now. Peyton has looked rattled at times this year, especially against the blitz, so look for the Jets and coach Rex Ryan to exploit that fact with some creative blitz packages.

Biggest Question: Can the Jets back up all of that trash they talked on Hard Knocks?

Sunday Jan. 9

No. 6 Green Bay Packers (10-6) at No. 3 Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) at Lincoln Financial Field, 4:30 p.m. ET, FOXGreen Bay played their way into the playoffs with a 10-3 win over Chicago in Week 17, while Philadelphia put it on cruise control knowing that it would have the No. 3 seed regardless. The Packers will go into Lincoln Financial Field looking for an upset over Michael Vick, who has had an MVP-type season. The Packers beat the Eagles earlier this season, but at that point Vick was still playing behind Kevin Kolb. Seriously, how long ago does that seem?Biggest Question: Will Vick continue being Philly’s Superman, or will Charles Woodson and the Packers bring his kryptonite?

No. 5 Baltimore Ravens (12-4) at No. 4 Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) Arrowhead Stadium, 1 p.m., ET, CBSThe Kansas City Chiefs are the biggest surprise of the NFL season, but they will have a tough welcome-to-the-playoffs moment when they host Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Ray Rice, Joe Flacco and Anquan Boldin power the Ravens offense, while Matt Cassel has his own star target in wideout Dwayne Bowe. Arrowhead might be one of the toughest places to play, but I doubt the term “tough environment” is even in the Ravens vocabulary.

Biggest Question: Who will prevail, the young rookies or the crafty (terrifying) veterans?

Philadelphia Weather: Snowy Conditions May Force Postponement Of Eagles-Vikings – SB Nation

So why, exactly, is the NFL discussing possibly postponing the Eagles-Vikings game scheduled for Sunday night on NBC? In a word: snow.

Weather all over the eastern seaboard is going to be a bit crazy today, but Philadelphia weather might be smack in the center of a blizzard. Here’s the forecast for today’s weather at the Philadelphia airport, via flightstats.com:

Today. Snow…mainly this afternoon. Snow may be heavy at times this afternoon. Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches. Brisk with highs in the lower 30s. North winds 15 to 20 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

Tonight. Periods of snow. Blowing snow. Snow may be heavy at times. Total snow accumulation of 10 to 14 inches. Windy with lows around 20. Northwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

That’s some heavy snow, for sure, and it might make playing football at Lincoln Financial Field difficult. But the NFL must also consider the safety of travel to and from the game, and whether fans can or will want to brave blizzard conditions to see Michael Vick play Brett Favre.

Jets coach Rex Ryan: Foot-fetish report is ‘personal matter’ – SportingNews.com

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called an Internet report that alleges his wife, Michelle, appeared in and posted foot-fetish videos a “personal matter.”

Deadspin.com posted several videos showing a woman that resembles Michelle Ryan showing off her feet. In one video, the cameraman talking to the woman sounds like Rex Ryan, according to the website. Deadspin reports there is other evidence that could link the Ryans to the videos, including a location (Ellicott City, Md.) listed on a foot fetish site that is the same location as where the Ryans lived when Rex was the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator.

Jets coach Rex Ryan: Foot-fetish report is 'personal matter'New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called an Internet report that alleges his wife, Michelle, appeared in and posted foot-fetish videos a “personal matter.”

The New York Daily News printed a screen capture from one of the foot-fetish videos on its front page Wednesday.

The Jets issued a statement, per the Daily News: “This is a personal matter and Rex will have no comment.” Rex is scheduled to meet with the New York media Wednesday afternoon.

This is not the first off-the-field incident the Jets have had to worry about this season. The NFL is investigating two separate cases; one in which strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped a Dolphins player during a game and another in which a female TV reporter allegedly was harassed by players at a Jets practice.

VIDEO: Patriots OG Dan Connolly runs into hearts of linemen everywhere – USA Today

Dec 20, 2010

VIDEO: Patriots OG Dan Connolly runs into hearts of linemen everywhere

On Sunday night, anybody who has ever assumed a three-point stance watched with delight as New England Patriots guard Dan Connolly rumbled 71 yards with what is thought to be the longest kick return by an offensive lineman in NFL history.

His second-quarter runback of a squib kick ended at the 4-yard line, when the 5th-year pro was dragged down by a shocked Packers special teams unit.

“I’ve never seen anything happen so slow in my life,” Pats QB Tom Brady joked after the game. “They won’t be kicking to him anymore, I’ll tell you that.”

Connolly, who’s listed at 6-4, 313 lbs., fielded a low kick off the foot of Mason Crosby, hunched over the ball and chugged slowly for middle of the field. When two Packers collided in front of him, Connolly stood up and accelerated through a gaping hole. Several broken tackles later, he was finally dragged down and immediately mobbed by ecstatic teammates. The Patriots scored three plays later to trim their deficit to 17-14 on the way to a 31-27 win.

His return is officially the longest since 1976, when the league began keeping such records. Detroit’s Larry Tearry had a 30-yard return in 1978 that had been recognized as the longest since then, according to the Associated Press.

Connolly later left the game with a head injury.

Dan Connolly: Patriots Guard Amazing Run Caps Strange Game – Bleacher Report

Dan Connolly had a fairly good night. As it is, linemen don’t usually end up with a near 100 yard game. But that is just what the guard for the New England Patriots did on Sunday night. With minutes left on the clock in Foxboro, the guard fielding a flubbed kickoff. He then ran 71 yards down field getting taken down by Packers defenders at the two yard line.

The Patriots would later score in the drives with a two yard pass from Tom Brady to Aaron Hernandez. Brady was again magnificent in this one but found tremendous amusement in the kick return. He told ESPN, ”I’ve never seen anything happen so slow in my life,” Brady said with a laugh. “They won’t be kicking to him anymore, I’ll tell you that.”

The Patriots are the hottest team in the NFL. It seems that no matter what they do, they win. They now can count on their linemen to be other worldly.

Heavy snow causes Metrodome roof to collapse in Minnesota – CNN International

Snow causes Metrodome roof to collapse

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

NEW: Several panels of the inflatable roof are torn, official says
NEW: NFL is “exploring alternatives” for Giants-Vikings game
Blizzard warning remains in effect for parts of the Midwest
More than 17 inches of snow has fallen in Minneapolis since Friday

(CNN) — The eye of a blizzard lingered Sunday over parts of Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota, where heavy snow caused the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis to collapse, a spokesman for the Minnesota State Patrol said.

A low pressure system, pushed by heavy winds, is creating hazardous conditions in parts of the Midwest, which has been blanketed by near-whiteout conditions since the storm began Friday.

The National Weather Service issued an alert Sunday for parts of the three states and regions along the Mississippi River, warning travelers of hazardous conditions caused by heavy snow, fierce winds and subzero temperatures.

Travel is strongly discouraged except in cases of an emergency. Road crews, struggling with winds in some cases up to 45 mph, will be pulled off the road as whiteout conditions are expected to continue, the weather service said.

In Minneapolis, the roof of the city’s 64,000-seat football stadium caved in, its iconic dome no longer visible after more than 17 inches of snow blanketed the Twin Cities since Friday.

Snow could be seen blowing through the normally covered stadium Sunday as workers wielding shovels cleared the field of the white stuff.

iReport: Treacherous conditions in Minnesota Video

Concerns about the stadium’s Teflon-covered inflatable dome surfaced Friday night, prompting officials to postpone a football game between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings.

The game, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed until Monday night, though the NFL issued a new statement Sunday that said the dome “will not be available” Monday or Tuesday.

“We are currently exploring alternatives to play the game Monday night at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium or another domed NFL stadium,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in the statement.

Lt. Eric Roeske, spokesman for Minnesota State Patrol, said it appeared the the Metrodome’s roof, which is held up by air pressure, “deflated” Sunday morning.

“Obviously the weight of the snow would affect how much air pressure is necessary to keep that roof up,” Roeske said. “Something caused that air pressure not to be strong enough or high enough to keep that roof at its normal position.”

Roy Terwilliger, chairman of the Minneapolis Metro Sports Commission — the group that oversees the Metrodome — said the heavy snow and cold, high winds “was too much pressure on the dome and several panels on the Teflon roof were caused to rip.”

He added that “you can look through the tear in the roof and see the sky.”

CNN meteorologist Bonnie Schneider said that 17.5 inches of snow has fallen in Minneapolis since Friday, and more than 21 inches in Shakopee, about 20 miles southwest of St. Paul.

“Snow can get heavier and higher in certain areas due to blowing and drifting snow,” Schneider said. “We’ve seen wind gusts in the Minneapolis area up to 45 mph so it’s possible that that snow can blow about and concentrations get even heavier in certain spots, making roofs more vulnerable.”

Terwilliger said experts are assessing the damage.

“As soon as we have that reading, there will be a conference call with the NFL, the teams and dome officials to assess exactly how we will proceed from there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin emergency workers are coping with snow-packed and icy roads, reporting that a stretch of I-94 between Tomah and Eau Claire continues to be impassible due to heavy snow.

While the National Weather Service is reporting a slight decrease in snowfall intensity by late Sunday, light to moderate snow and freezing temperatures accompanied by wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected across much of the state, according to the Wisconsin Emergency Division for Emergency Management.
