Woman Falls In Fountain - smartphone

Woman Falls Into Fountain: Cathy Cruz Marrero was texting on her phone while walking in the Berkshire Mall in Reading, Pennsylvania when she suddenly collapsed headfirst into a water fountain.

The scene was caught by the mall’s surveillance video system and then posted on YouTube, where it has been viewed nearly 2 million times.

While she wasn’t hurt physically, Cruz Marrero, who works in the mall, has hired an attorney.

What hurts, she says, is “the humiliation (from the video having been put online). The humiliation. Ask my husband – I cried for days. … You don’t know how many people are laughing at me.”

Cruz adds that texting while walking is “dangerous. … I could have been walking into a bus, a car, a ditch, anything. Texting and walking, take it from me, is dangerous. It really is.”

America Idol’s Adam Lambert lives the dream as Alex Lambert faces homelessness – Daily Mail

By Daily Mail ReporterLast updated at 12:34 AM on 20th January 2011

There could be no clearer sign of how important American Idol can be than the differing experiences of former contestants Adam Lambert and Alex Lambert.

While the two share a last name, they have little else in common other than their time on the show.

Adam is now a genuine star, touring the world and moving into a luxury home after a stay at the upmarket Sunset Marquis. Meanwhile Alex claims to be homeless, ‘crashin behind buidings and sleepin outside’ after failing to make it after leaving the show.

Living the dream: Adam Lambert, left, and drag queen Raja arrive at the premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 3 in West Hollywood, California last night

Living the dream: Adam Lambert, left, and drag queen Raja arrive at the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 in West Hollywood, California last night

While both were popular contestants while on Idol, they have had differing experiences since.

Adam finished as runner up on the eighth series of the show and promptly signed a record deal. Since then he has released two albums and earned a Grammy nomination.

Last night the 28-year-old was partying in West Hollywood at the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3.

Meanwhille Alex reached the semi-final on the ninth season of the show, and even after his exit more than 19,000 fans signed a petition for his reinstatement.

Differing experiences: While Alex Lambert, left, is facing homelessness, Adam is moving from the Sunset Marquis into a new home

Post Idol he signed a  development deal and starred in Simon Fuller’s web series about reality contestants, If I Can Dream.

But little has been heard from the 20-year-old during the year since he left the show.

He tweeted this week: ‘O my goodness yall! I have been crashin behind buidings and sleepin outside but I dont want nobody to feel sorry for me! I’m a grown ass man.’

After his tweets caused a storm of controversy, he defended them, insisting he was sleeping rough.

‘F*** yeah I was sleepin outside! That s*** sucks too! I’m goin back home to get my shit together!

‘But I will be back! And I’m comin strong! LETS DO THIS!’

His record company denied that Alex was sleeping rough.

‘Alex is not homeless,’ the spokesperson said. ‘He’s been crashing on friends’ couches while looking for an apartment, but he’s getting a retainer and working on [new music] demos.’

*Series 10 of American Idol starts tonight on Fox in the U.S.

Tax preparation companies offer lots of free filing options – USA Today

By Sandra Block, USA TODAY

Even though we’re three weeks into 2011, it’s not too late to make New Year’s resolutions. And here’s one that’s a lot easier than giving up chocolate or beer: Resolve to tackle your own tax return.

More than 60% of taxpayers pay a tax preparer to do their returns every year. While that makes a lot of sense for people with complex returns, more than 20 million Americans file a 1040EZ, the tax form for taxpayers who don’t itemize, claim no dependents and earn less than $100,000 a year. If you fall into that category — or use the slightly longer Form 1040A — you can save a lot of money by doing your own tax return this year. And thanks to technology, you don’t need to delve into the tax code to get the job done properly.

Saving money isn’t the only reason you should consider doing your own taxes. Preparing your tax return forces you to take a hard look at how much money you earned last year, after taxes. If you contributed to a 401(k) plan, you’ll realize how much your contributions reduce your tax bill. And that might provide the kick in the pants you need to save a little more.

Tax software companies, eager to attract new business, have gone to great lengths to make tax preparation easy, if not exactly fun. Last week, TurboTax released SnapTax, a mobile phone application that allows users to file their federal and state taxes on their smartphones. SnapTax, which costs $14.99 to e-file a federal and state tax return, is limited to taxpayers who file a 1040EZ.

Other sources of low- or no-cost tax preparation:

•IRS Free File. This partnership between the IRS and tax software companies is designed to encourage more taxpayers to file their returns electronically, which reduces errors and saves the government money. Taxpayers with 2010 adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less are eligible to use the program.

This year, 17 private companies and one non-profit are participating in Free File. In addition to the $58,000 AGI cutoff, participating companies can have their own criteria. For example, H&R Block Free File is limited to taxpayers who are 51 or younger. TaxSlayer’s free offering is limited to taxpayers who are 25 or younger or 65 or older. Other participating companies limit participation based on your state of residence, military status or eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

All of the programs will prepare and e-file one federal tax return for free. In addition, 21 states offer a State Free File program that allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and file one state tax return. You can find a list of those states, along with more information about the federal program, at freefile.irs.gov.

•Free tax preparation online programs. Even if you’re not eligible for Free File, you may be able to prepare and file your federal tax return online for free. TurboTax and H&R Block at Home both offer free editions for taxpayers who file a 1040EZ or other simple tax return, with no income restrictions. TaxAct’s free edition provides tax preparation and e-filing for one federal return, with no restrictions on income or type of return.

The growth of Free File, now in its eighth year, “has created a private marketplace for free tax preparation products,” says David Williams, senior vice president for the IRS.

Keep in mind that tax software companies are in the business of making money. If you use one of the free programs, you’ll probably have to fend off a lot of pitches to upgrade to a paid product. You’ll also have to pay to file a state tax return.

Of course, you can always file your tax return for free by doing it the old-school way: with a pencil and paper. In that case, all you pay is postage. But this year, that method will require some extra effort. For the first time, the IRS won’t mail tax forms and instructions to taxpayers who filed manually in the past. If you want the forms, you’ll either have to download them from irs.gov, or call 800-829-3676 to request them. Tax forms and booklets will be available at some libraries and post offices, but the IRS has limited that distribution, too, Williams says.

“It’s primarily a cost-saving issue,” Williams says. “It turns out that many of those forms ended up being in the trash.”

There is an alternative for penny-pinchers who don’t need a lot of hand-holding: Free File Fillable Forms. This program provides electronic versions of tax forms that you can fill out and file for free. The program will do the math but won’t provide guidance, Williams says. It’s available at irs.gov.

King’s Day Was a Long Time Coming – Patch

City offices, schools and libraries will all be closed Monday, the 25th year that Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been celebrated as a federal holiday. Some Beach Cities residents may now take the holiday for granted, but it took legislators nearly two decades to pass it into law.

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan introduced the first legislation seeking to establish a federal holiday in memory of Dr. King’s January birthday just months after the civil rights leader was assassinated in 1968.

As petitions in support of the holiday were gathered, individual states (Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut) began to pass their own legislation celebrating the holiday.

The holiday proposal was presented to Congress three years after Conyers first introduced the concept. And that’s where the bill sat for eight years.

Coretta Scott King testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Joint Hearings of Congress in support of the bill in 1979. But a few months later, the U.S. House of Representatives voted against the holiday.

As many thought the fight was over, singer Stevie Wonder released a hit record titled “Happy Birthday” in 1980, which became a rallying cry for the King holiday bill.

He joined Coretta as she handed petitions to Congress with more than 6 million signatures in support of the bill. This time, the holiday passed the House.

After passing the Senate, then-President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law in 1983, and the first official holiday was observed on the third Monday in January 1986.

Now, the day has joined the league of other three-day weekend federal holidays when the community stops to remember the meaning of the day.

In Redondo, City Hall, both libraries and schools will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday. Banks and postal services will also be closed. And Beach Cities Transit will operate on its weekday service schedule.

IRS says relax and file electronically – Omaha World-Herald

The 2011 tax season doesn’t have to bring on the annual anxiety attack, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

This year, take a deep breath and then take advantage of the federal government’s Free File program.

If you make less than $58,000, companies such as TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxSlayer offer simple question-and-answer tax filing programs for free through www.irs.gov.

“It helps a lot, because it doesn’t require (people) to have tax preparation information,” but it does ensure that they get all the tax breaks offered to them, said David Williams, a senior IRS executive.

Also, filing electronically is the fastest way to receive your tax refund.

“IRS e-file is now the norm, not the exception,” IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement.

In 2010, nearly 100 million people — 70 percent of taxpayers — used IRS e-file, according to the IRS.

Another reason not to panic: Taxpayers have three extra days to file.

Taxpayers have until April 18 to file their returns because of the way the calendar falls this year, Williams said.

For individuals or families that make an adjusted gross income of more than $58,000, the IRS offers the electronic version of its paper tax forms on its website.

It includes a calculator to avoid common filing mistakes, and it’s a secure way to e-file, Williams said.

Also Friday, the IRS said that by mid-February it will be able to process returns affected by the December tax law changes.

The IRS will be reprogramming its system to reflect the new law, which included an extension of the child tax credit, a break for families footing the bill for college tuition and other child-related expenses.

The estimated 9 million taxpayers affected must wait a few more weeks to file their returns, or they could e-file at any time through major software providers, which will hold the returns until the IRS system is updated.

For more information on e-filing, visit www.IRS.gov.
